Top 2018 Stories

In March 2018 began reporting for CBC North in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Since then I’ve covered a range of stories from climate change to health-care for digital, video and radio platforms. Here are some of my favourite stories that I’ve produced in 2018.

Bill C-75 and Northern juries

Following the highly publicized Gerald Stanley case, the federal government introduced omnibus justice reform bill, Bill C-75, which included omnibus justice reform bill included a proposal to eliminate preemptory challenges to make juries more representative. However, some criminal defence lawyers said it could actually have the opposite affect. I looked into how the bill could affect juries in the North.

Children of Survivors

CBC North did a number of CBC Asks series across the North addressing issues that are important to Northerners. Among them was the series Children of Survivors, which highlighted the stories of several children of survivors of residential school and the effect intergenerational trauma has had on their lives. I worked on a story about Lloyd Thrasher, which details some of the more complex long-term effects of colonization as well as a panel discussion on the topic.

National Geographic polar bear story

One year ago, national Geographic shared a controversial video linking an emaciated polar bear to climate change. In August they released an article from the conservation organization behind the video detailing what went wrong. I examined the impact on and reaction of Inuit who were affected most by the viral story.

Yellowknife wellness camp

The Arctic Indigenous Wellness Camp opened in Yellowknife this year. I had the pleasure of visiting the camp from when it was being built to its grand opening in April.

Pole licking Northerners

A fun story inspired by a piece on As It Happens. Several Northerners shared their stories of getting tongues stuck to frozen stuff with me.

Justice system failing Indigenous offenders

The Supreme Court of Canada made a landmark decision in the 1999 case R v. Gladue to stress restorative justice and reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous offenders in Canadian prisons. But advocates say the Northwest Territories justice system has failed to live up to this promise.

Northwest Territories Health Care

I covered a number of stories on health care in the Northwest Territories this year. From the challenges of having endometriosis or a concussion to a series 1, 2, 3 on allegations of cultural bias in the health care system and the government’s promise to deliver cultural safety training to health and social services staff.
